The EST Africa Manifesto
Africa's economic emergence is constrained by the reliability of its physical infrastructure. Our mission is to build the unshakeable steel foundations that power continental industrial growth.
Forged in resilience, scale & technical mastery
EST Africa was established in the industrial heartland of Gauteng on a defiant premise: African engineering projects should never have to choose between world-class fabrication tolerances and continental logistical agility.
For decades, mining houses and EPC contractors faced an impossible dilemma — import fabricated steel from Europe or Asia at exorbitant cost and months of port congestion, or rely on local workshops without the automated CNC machinery for complex, high-tolerance heavy structures.
We built EST Africa to close that gap for good. From our 45 000 m² automated plant we combine Level 500 Tekla BIM, automated drilling, sawing and plasma cutting and robotic welding with unmatched mastery of Pan-African freight corridors. We do not just supply structural steel — we guarantee structural certainty.
Three convictions, cast in steel
Precision is survival
A flange hole 5 mm out is not a defect on a screen — it is a crane crew idle 3 000 km from the shop. We design the error out.
One accountable chain
Detailing, fabrication, coating, logistics and erection under one roof means no gap for a project to fall through.
Engineered for the environment
We coat for the actual acid mist and salinity a structure will face, not for a generic classification on a datasheet.
The timeline of growth
- 2008Foundation
The Germiston workshop
Founded as a specialised structural steel workshop in South Africa's industrial engineering hub, focused on commercial portal frames and mining plant refurbishment.
- 2013The mining leap
Copperbelt expansion
Secured our first multi-thousand-ton mining contract in Zambia and established a dedicated Pan-African cross-border logistics desk for abnormal road transport.
- 2018Automation
Full CNC line integration
Invested over USD 14 million in automated Voortman and Ficep beam drilling, sawing and HD plasma lines. Capacity rose 350% while manual measurement error was eliminated.
- PresentContinental leader
25+ nations serviced
A premier structural steel partner to African mining houses, port authorities and logistics developers, operating to ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 3834-2 certification.
Driven by engineering rigor
Hendrik van der Merwe
Managing Director & Chief Structural Engineer · Pr.Eng, B.Eng (Civil), MSAICEWith over 28 years engineering heavy industrial structures across Africa, Hendrik founded EST Africa to solve the chronic disconnect between design consultants and the realities of on-site assembly.
“When you are erecting a 40-metre plate girder over a copper screening plant in remote Katanga, you do not have the luxury of sending a beam back because a flange hole is off by 5 millimetres. Perfection in the workshop is not a luxury; it is a survival requirement in Africa.”
Under his direction, EST Africa pioneered 3D Tekla BIM tied directly to robotic CNC fabrication and rigorous ultrasonic inspection — setting a new benchmark for structural integrity and erection speed in African infrastructure.
